Neuromuscular Diseases

"Neuromuscular Diseases" are diseases that involve the peripheral neurons (the "nerves") and/or the muscles. Within them are included themyopathies(diseases of the muscles),neuropathies(diseases of the peripheral “nerves”), diseases of the neuromuscular junction, such asmyasthenias, in addition to many others.

They existcausesacquired, genetic and hereditary and, in general, they all have in common the lack of progressive muscular strength.

 

Some examples of neuromuscular diseases are thepolyneuropathies, muscular dystrophies, congenital myopathies, dermatomyositis, polymyositis, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Myasthenia Gravis,among others.

 

Some of these have treatment capable of controlling symptoms well. Others, however, do not have specific medications.  All, however, need to be closely monitored by a neurologist, in order to treat possible associated symptoms, which are very common, such as difficulty eating, difficulties urinary tract, symptoms of anxiety and depression, etc.
